Back to School Style for Girls: Leopard Print Ballet Flats
Girl's Cherokee® Flora Ballet - Leopard
If you caught yesterday's photo post featuring an upclose look at what I've been up to lately, you got a sneak peek at my daughter Kylie's back-to-school outfit. It all started with these Cherokee leopard-print ballet flats from Target (pictured right). Originally $14.99, these ballet flats were on clearance for under $10.00 at my local Target here in Frederick. Leopard print is still very in, so if your local Target doesn't have these, or if they aren't exactly the style you're looking for, you can find many other cheetah-print flats for girls on any budget. You can also find leopard flats in bold colors like blue, purple, or red. Here are some of my other favorites under $40.00, including budget options under $20.00 and under $10.00:

Capelli New York Leopard Flat With Pop Binding And Elastic Strap Toddler Girls Flat,
Dreams Per Ballet Flat (Toddler/Little Kid/Big Kid)), $27.00
Hello Kitty Leila Flats Shoes Gold Youth Kids Girls, $29.99
Jessica Simpson Leandra Flat (Little Kid/Big Kid), $34.95 - $35.00
After Kylie picked her cheetah-print shoes out, we had the task of building her outfit solely around the shoes - a styling process I prefer to do in reverse. I rushed from store to store, practically yelling at sales women in a very turrets sort of way, shouting things like "Do you have flat-front detached vest for girls?!" and "No I don't want a rewards card. I have ten minutes to find a shirt to go with this skirt!!".
There were a few skirts with built-in leggings, but none of them fit Kylie quite right. What can I say, like me, she is a bit short and has a lot of junk in the trunk. Finding bottoms that fit is a challenge, so we did our own layering. She already had a pair of black leggings at home, so I started looking for a black skirt. Aeropostale P.S. had black bubble skirts for girls on sale for $10.00.
Which colors should you style with leopard print?
If you're styling brown/black leopard print shoes for kids, go for bold-colored graphic tops, preferrably with some bling like studs, sequins, or glitter. My favorite color to pair with brown/black leopard print is red. For little girls, pink and purple also look great with cheetah print. For teens, I'd pair leopard with red or blue. If you're styling colored leopard-print flats, you can pair them with black, or you can still pair them with more bright pops of color. Go for solid tops, and try to avoid layering other patterns in the look. I've seen some store campaigns styling animal prints mixed with plaid, but I personally don't like it. If you however want to try it for your girl, make sure you tie them together by using the same colors.
I kept Kylie's accessories minimal. Just a simple stretchy black headband was all she needed to tie in the black skirt and leggings. If it had been chilly out, a light red scarf would've looked great too. She still has her piercing studs in, and luckily they matched. They are simple crystal stud earrings. Anymore jewelry would've been too much. Keep it simple.
How to Style Girls Leopard Print Flats
- Pair them with leggings and a long graphic tee or leggings, and bubble skirt or tutu and graphic, embellished top.
- Pair brown/black leopard print with a bold red, and pair bold-colored leopard flats with either black or a contrasting pop of color.
- Do not pattern mix. Stick with solid-colored tops.
- Keep the accessories minimal.
The backpack is the most important part of a girl's back-to-school look, because it's something they'll carry around everyday. Children want bags that reflect who they are and what they like. For Kylie that meant I had to find a backpack with style and bling. You can imagine I nearly fainted when I saw this black and white backpack covered in clear sequins at P.S. by Aeropostale. However, priced at $50.00, it delivered severe sticker shock. Fortunately it was 50% off. Buying higher-end items on clearance is the way to go with items that get a lot of wear. I could've gotten her a backpack at Walmart for $20.00, but because this was on sale, I got her a high-quality and extremely stylish backpack for $30.00. Best of all, it'll last her for years to come.
It is currently unavailable online, but check your local P.S. store. The one here in Frederick had it in several colors and patterns. The sequins are clear and are sewn on all over, so there's no need to worry about them popping off. While it's a fashion backpack, it's still very functional. It's standard size with one large front pocket and two medium side pockets. It has a drawstring and snap closure, and the straps have padding on the shoulders. If your local P.S. store doesn't carry these, or if you don't live near one, here are some blingy backpack options, with budget backpacks under $20.00:

Hello Kitty Glitter Bow Backpack, $18.00
Skechers Twinke Toes Sequins Forever Basic Backpack, $20.94 - $34.99
