My Holiday-Style Essential: The Sequin Tank
|Kirra Women's Sequin Tank Dress|
A sequin tank is my go-to for shimmering holiday style. If you have the right basic black pieces to go with it, a sequin tank is a versatile and beautiful staple that will get you through a number of holiday events with style. Pictured below are three different ways to style a sequin tank.
Starting from left to right:
1. A Fun Holiday Cocktail Party Look : You can create the look of a fun party dress by pairing a sequin tank with a short A-line skirt or a bubble skirt. Tuck the tank into the skirt and pair it with black high heel booties. To keep warm (and if you want more coverage on your legs), add on a pair of black opaque tights. Pair it with a chain-strap shoulder bag.
2. A Dressy-Casual Holiday Gathering: To dress it down, pair a sequin tank with a black blazer, jeans, and flats. This is a great way to dress a tank up or down. To keep it semi-casual but dress it up for evening, pair it with heels instead of flats, sweep on a smoky eye makeup or a red lip, wear dressy jewelry, and a nice clutch.
3. A Formal Holiday Look: For a formal holiday event, like a ball or going to a ballet or symphony show, create a formal look by tucking your sequin tank into a long black maxi skirt paired with formal black pumps and a shiny hard-case clutch. For a menswear-inspired formal look, pair the sequin tank with black trousers and a black tuxedo jacket.
I'm so fond of this look that I've bought several sequin tanks. My favorite one for the holidays is a gold-sequined tank. Don't get me wrong, I love a black sequin top, but whenever I'm pairing a shiny tank with all-black items, it's important to get some color going on, and gold is the perfect color for the holidays. Although, with all of the bright-colored pants that are popular even for Fall and Winter, it's a good time to buy a white sequin tank.
What I Look for in a Sequin Tank:
Not all sequin tops are created equal, and not all designs are versatile enough for the three looks featured above. The fit, design, and quality are all very important. When purchasing a sequin tank, I look for:
*a traditional scoop-neck design with tank-top sleeves (not spaghetti straps)
*a cut that is fitted up top and slightly loose-fitting at the waist and hips
*a hem that comes below the waist but stops at the hips
