Top 10 Beauty Trends from the Spring 2014 Runway Shows

There were a few bold makeup trends at the spring/ summer runway shows for 2014, though I'm happy to say that most of them were subtle and wearable - like the low ponytails, messy braids, and minimal makeup. This more natural approach to the top beauty trends is perfect for spring and summer.

1. All About the Lashes -Makeup artist Diane Kendall for NARS Cosmetics used this technique to create a fresh and young but still very beautiful look. At Thakoon (pictured top left), strong lashes were set against a fresh, natural look with slightly rosy cheeks and natural lips. Get the look with an eyelash curler and a great lengthening mascara. I really, really, really love the NYC Skyrise Lengthening Mascara - REALLY! I've been meaning to do a review on it, because I love it so much. It just so happens to be an affiliate link, but seriously, I am in LOVE with it and will never bother with another mascara in my life. To get the best look, start with the eyelash curler, then apply one coat and let dry, then apply a second coat.

Orange Lips - This look was popular a few years ago when tangerine tango was the color of the year,LORAC Lip Luxe 8-hour in Coral, while fairer skin types should definitely go for a subtle peach color like the L'Oreal Lipstick in Peach Fuzz.
though I wasn't sad to see it go. Though on the spring 2014 runways, it was much more wearable. Fendi models wore subtle peach lipstick while Donna Karen models wore a reddish-orange. For a wearable orange lipstick, look for shades in coral, peach, or apricot. Darker skin tones can try a reddish-orange like the

3. Low Ponytails - Long, low ponytails were all over the spring runways and spanned from super sleek to loose and messy. DKNY (pictured bottom left) featured sleek side ponytail.

4. All-Over Natural - Surprisingly a lot of the couture brands like Balmain and Lanvin (pictured bottom right), as well as American designers like Michael Kors featured an all-over natural beauty look with low-maintenance hair and minimal makeup. To get this look, you can't unfortunately just go without makeup. Since this brings more focus to the skin, you have to have both minimal yet effective coverage. Start with a good primer then top with B.B. Cream and a good photo-ready foundation. Correct dark circles and extreme blemished with a yellow-tinted cover stick rather than your traditional concealer. I love the NYC Cover Stick in yellow. I'd link to it here from Amazon, but it's overpriced online. Honestly it only costs a dollar or two at Walmart. Illuminate cheekbones with a bronzer blush for a more natural glow with more definition on the cheekbones.

5. Minimal Glam - Makeup artists took a cue from the glamour seen at Cannes - featuring the typical American formula for a glam makeup look only with lighter and more natural makeup. For example the bold lips were a sheer rosy pink, while the smoky eye was created with lighter shades of brown instead of heavy charcoal shades. Get the lip look by lightly applying a berry or rose colored lip stain followed by a sheer gloss.

6. Sheer and Nude Nails - The funky nail art and dark nail colors of the last few seasons are taking a break this spring. Opt for a sheer or nude nail, and if you must do nail art, take a cue from the runway trend with a half-moon manicure (pictured top right on layout #1 - from Jenni Kayne show). To get the look pictured above, use a nude base coat topped with OPI Alpine Snow.

7. Strong Eyes with Nude Lips - Saint Laurent (pictured bottom right) and Missoni both had classic but bold cat eyes with natural lips, while models at Versace (pictured bottom right) were given the full smoky eye treatment with paler-than-nude lips. Rodarte paired classic sexy cat eyes with pale lips. These bold, dark eyes were often paired with artfully tousled hair. Get the bold cat-eye look with a waterproof liquid liner in black.

8. Bold Shadow with Minimal Liner - Marc Jacobs, Prada, Rochas, and Giorgio Armani each had their models wearing bold colorful eyeshadow with little to no eyeliner or mascara. It wasn't the most wearable beauty trend, but it was certainly a top trend on the runway.

9. Braids - From the messy french braids at Rachel Zoe and Alberta Ferretti to the braided crown at Rebecca Minkoff, Naeem Kahn (pictured top left), and Nicole Miller;  romantic, wearable braids were a common do seen on the runway. These casual braids are perfect with spring and summer fashion. Here's a really great tutorial on a simple milk-maid braided updo by Claire Ashley.

10.Candy-Colored Lips - In contrast to all the nude and pale lips, Helmut Lang featured dramatic red-stained lips, and Prabal Gurung featured lips in all different shades of bubblegum pink, lilac purple, and red. Monique Lullieir also featured bold candy-red lipstick. For a bold candy-pink lipstick, try Maybelline New York Colorsensational Lip Color in 5th Avenue Fuchsia.

Despite the few bold makeup trends for Spring 2014, it's mostly about natural colors and effortless hair. Those are beauty trends we can all celebrate!
