What to Wear to a Spring Garden Wedding
What to wear to a spring garden wedding can be a little tricky. You never want to be under-dressed at a wedding, though spring weddings are sometimes outside and less formal than an indoor wedding, so you don't want to be overdressed either. You also need to dress for practicality. Of course you should avoid stiletto heels at an outdoor garden wedding for example. Most of all, you want to take advantage of the season's prettiest pastels and floral prints. It's a great time to indulge in a flowy maxi dress or even a fun jumpsuit. Let's start with the dress code. For spring you may come across "garden party attire", "garden formal", or "outdoor casual". Just because the word casual is in the dress code, that doesn't mean you should wear jeans. More often than not, it simply means "dressy casual" as in the ladies don't have to wear a fancy dress, and the men don't have to wear a full suit. But it's still a wedding after all. Just as you should never wear white when attending a wedding, I strongly feel that you should also never wear jeans, and unless you're well aware that it's going to be extremely casual, you should never wear shorts either.
I'd break it down into one of two ways - it's either dressy-casual or formal, both with a teensy bit of wiggle room if it's an outdoor spring or summer wedding. If it's "garden party attire", "outdoor casual", or a "backyard garden wedding", stick with dressy-casual. The wiggle room in this case being that men can get away with skipping the suit jacket and depending on the style of the wedding, could even get away with a nice pair of khaki pants in place of dress slacks.

Women, this is your chance to have a little fun and maybe wear a dressy jumpsuit or a crop top with a high-waist skirt instead of wearing a dress. You could also go with a fun floral print maxi with flat sandals or a flowy hi-low dress.
If however, the wedding invite calls for "garden formal", stick with formal wear - the men with suits and ties and the women with formal cocktail dresses. But here's the thing, at formal outdoor weddings, even the bridesmaids sometimes wear above-the-knee dresses. So just because it's "formal", it doesn't necessarily mean you ladies have to wear long gowns. Confusing, I know.

Break it down like this - if it's "garden formal" but it's an outdoor spring wedding in the afternoon, shoot for black-tie optional, meaning you do need to wear a nice dress, but it's okay if it's above-the-knee. If you don't already have a dress and you're on a budget, I'd suggest an above-the-knee dress that you can dress up with heels and a statement necklace yet dress down with flats and minimal jewelry if you wind up with another spring event to go to. A pretty fit-and-flare dress, for example is the perfect thing to dress up for a wedding and dress down for a nice date night.
