Blogger Style: Summer Date Night
Summer is a fun time to dress for dates and special occasions. For me it's a chance to wear my favorite new sandals and a pretty sundress. Though I know it can be tricky to dress for a summer date. In all the years I've been doing style guides, one of the things I receive searches and reader questions on the most is how to dress for a summer date. It can be a challenge, between the weather and the fact that summer dates sometimes involve outings that don't consist of the typical dinner and a movie. You may find yourself invited to something more casual like a barbecue or pool party. For a special summer date, you may find yourself at anything from an outdoor "movie on the lawn" at a local gallery, a trip to a local winery, or live music in the park.
Dressing for any event leaves a lot of people stumped mostly because we worry about either being too overdressed or too under-dressed. For a date in particular, it's also important to strike the right balance between sexy and classy, as well as pretty yet comfortable. For a summer date, it's a safe bet to stick with dressy casual, like a sundress and nice flat sandals or wedges. For a casual summer date, denim is totally fine too if you pair it with a nice blouse and accessories.
A Pretty Printed Shift Dress - A printed shift dress is always a great option for a date. It shows some leg but fits comfortably, so it's a nice balance between sexy and pretty without being too revealing. I love a cute T-shirt shift dress like the one pictured above; because it goes with heels, dressy flats, sandals, or gladiators. But to be honest, I prefer a strapless dress that is tight on top but longer and loose-fitting on the bottom. It's all about choosing which part you'd rather show off. Because showing off multiple parts at once is just going to make you look...well, not so classy. Pictured: MODA INTERSECTION
Off-the-Shoulder -I just had to include an off-the-shoulder look in the mix. It's romantic and pretty, and it's sexy in a way that is much more comfortable and wearable than a body-con dress. Off-the-shoulder and cold shoulder has been such a huge trend this year, you can find the look in both dresses and tops. A flowy cold shoulder top is the perfect way to dress up denim for summer. Go Boho-Chic - I love, love, love a boho-chic dress for summer. It lends a laid-back feel to any look, so if you're wanting to wear a pretty dress but are worried about being overdressed, go with a boho dress to keep the look pretty yet casual. It's something you could easily dress up with heels and jewelry or dress down with flat sandals. For a more casual look, go with a boho-chic top and cropped denim. Pair a Casual Top with a Skirt - Pairing separates is one of my favorite ways to dress up without having to run out and buy a new dress. Simply pair a tee or blouse with a skirt. For a dressy look, pair a tank or crop with a nice maxi skirt, and top off the look with a statement necklace. If you need a more casual outfit, go with a denim skirt. As with any look, you can dress this up or down with different accessories and hair and makeup. Pictured: Loving-Evelyn
The Little White Dress - Whether you go with something casual and boho-chic or a nice cocktail dress, a little white dress is the perfect summer staple for a night out. Pictured: The Girl from Panama
