Get the Look: Modern Terrariums

Modern mini terrariums are a huge home accessory trend this year. One trip through West Elm or Pottery Barn, and you'll see display after display of open clear-glass planters that serve as mini terrariums filled with modern plants like succulents or live air plants. My favorite kind are the faceted geometric terrariums, like the ones pictured here. I snapped a few shots of them on a recent visit to West Elm.

They're the perfect addition to a modern living space or office. Though I also love how West Elm has them displayed in a centerpiece. To get that look, incorporate these planters in different shapes and sizes, and fill them interesting details, like seashells or decorative rocks.

What About Drainage??

This is a commonly-asked question when it comes to modern glass planters. With plants like succulents which require little water, the moss and pebbles and layer of dirt are plenty to keep water from pooling on the bottom as long as you don't water too much. Succulents are so easy to care for, and they just happen to be on-trend as well this year; they're perfect to put in a modern terrarium. Here's a great video from West Elm on how to layer the elements in your planter.
