Biz Tips: A Simple Success Tip that Trumps All the Rest
Often the best advice is the most simple. One of the best bits of business advice I've ever heard was from Girlboss by Nasty Gal founder Sophia Amoruso. In her debut book, Amoruso (who took her clothing company to 100 million dollars in sales during her 6th year of business) advises budding entrepreneurs to do more of what works and less of what doesn't. Do More of What Works and Less of What Doesn't
It's simple enough. Like I said, the best advice is often the most simple and something we've likely heard before. The problem doesn't lie in figuring out some big secret to success but rather following through with what we already know we should be doing.
It's a lot like weight loss or relationships. It's easy to know what we should do, but things get in the way - things like fear, doubt, temptation, laziness, insecurities, and so on. It's easy to get discouraged if we don't see big results right away.
When I decided to take my website from part-time to full-time, I had a lot of fear holding me back. What if I put in more time and effort, and it never paid off? I knew what I needed to do to make it successful. After looking at my traffic sources and sales, it was easy to see what was working and what wasn't.
It's tempting to pull back out of fear, especially whenever we have set-backs. But the sad irony is that if you pull back, you definitely won't succeed...not in business, relationships, or life in general. You just have to go for it knowing that your efforts won't always pay off, but reminding yourself that one day, they just might.
If you get even a glimmer of hope, just keep going. Keep doing what works. Eventually you will see a cumulative effect (if you really are on the right track.) If not, well, you may want to go another route. But that is a subject best left for a different Biz Tips article.
